In England's Derbyshire region, close to Ticknall, is a Grade I listed country home called Calke Abbey that is under the charitable National Trust's care. From the 12th century until Henry VIII dissolved the priory, the location was an Augustinian priory. The current structure, which was given the name Calke Abbey in 1808, was never an abbey but rather a Baroque palace constructed between 1701 and 1704. Before being given to the Trust in 1985 as payment for death duties, the mansion belonged to the Harpur family for nearly 300 years. The house is now open to the public, and many of its rooms are purposefully left in the disrepair that existed when the Trust received the house. Richard d'Avranches, 2nd Earl of Chester, who had inherited considerable properties in both England and Normandy, including Calke and many of the surrounding villages, founded Calke Priory sometime between 1115 and 1120 and dedicated it to St. Giles. The Priory was originally a self-governing community, but after Ranulf de Gernon, 4th Earl of Chester passed away in 1153, it (together with most of his Derbyshire possessions) was given to his widow, Maud of Gloucester, as part of her dowry. After first giving the canons at Calke Priory access to the nearby St. Wystan's Church in Repton, Maud later ordered the construction of a new priory in Repton that is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. She transferred the Canons from Calke to the new Repton Priory in 1172, making Calke a "cell" under the control of Repton Priory. The priory's history throughout the 14th and 15th centuries is unknown, however, historian Oliver Garnett hypothesises that it may have operated more as the hub of an agricultural estate during this time than as a place of worship.
